Our Roots: The Birth of Backyard Bird Feeding (1950s)
Backyard bird feeding was just beginning to emerge as a national hobby when our founder, Gil Dunn, created the groundbreaking Flight Deck Windowsill Feeding Station in 1952. His design offered seed, water, and even peanut butter—inviting wild birds right to the window where they could be enjoyed up close.
An early tear-out ad in The New Yorker launched Duncraft nationally. From that moment on, Gil continued to design, invent, and manufacture products that shaped the young world of backyard bird feeding.
Growing a Community of Bird Lovers (1960s–1990s)
By the 1960s, Duncraft published its first 16-page black-and-white catalog, offering bird feeders, houses, seed blends, and birding gifts.
In 1972, second-generation owners Michael and Sharon Dunn expanded the line of Duncraft-brand feeders and established the company as a trusted national resource for bird lovers.
In the mid-1990s, Duncraft became one of the first bird-feeding companies to launch an eCommerce website—bringing our expertise and products to customers nationwide.
